Creating Change

Until basic needs are met it can be difficult for children to focus and be successful in school.  The mission of The T.O.U.C.H. Closet Inc. is to provide new undergarments, hair care vouchers, new and gently used shoes and coats for children in grades K-12 in crisis situations within the USD 259 school district.

Our Services

Around 15 million children in the United States live in families with incomes below the federal poverty threshold. Poverty and crisis can interfere with a child’s ability to be successful in the classroom. The T.O.U.C.H. Closet Inc., recognizes these factors and aims to reach children in crisis by meeting basic needs that are often overlooked. We work with school counselors and social workers, on a referral only basis, to ensure that we serve children with the most immediate needs utilizing the following services.

Shoes

Properly fitted shoes remove the distraction of foot pain created by a child wearing shoes that are too small. Shoes that are not tattered and worn can reduce embarrassment and bullying. By providing properly fitted and seasonally appropriate shoes, the student can concentrate and remain focused on their studies.

undergarments

Many times children in crisis are moved to different placements very suddenly.  This sudden movement does not allow ample time for children to pack all of their belongings.  By providing undergarments as a resource The T.O.U.C.H. Closet aims to ensure that children impacted by crisis or poverty will have access to the bare essentials.

Coats

During the winter months it is imperative that children have warm coats.  We realize the importance of outerwear and coats that are functional, with working zippers and buttons. Donations of coats that are in excellent condition and vary in all sizes from youth to adult are always needed.

hair care

Cultural differences in placement of children in crisis can lead to a deterioration in the care of their hair.  The T.O.U.C.H Closet has a network of licensed stylists and barbers available to help with the maintenance of all types of hair.  When a child feels good about their appearance, they are inclined to be more comfortable and confident.
