When children lack access to basic necessities, their ability to learn and thrive is directly impacted. The T.O.U.C.H. Closet Inc. supports students in grades K–12 across the USD 259 school district by providing critical essentials—including new undergarments, hair care vouchers, and new or gently used shoes and coats—to children facing crisis situations.

An estimated 15 million children in the United States live in families with incomes below the federal poverty threshold, placing them at increased risk for educational and emotional challenges. Poverty and crisis can interfere with a child’s ability to engage fully in the classroom, particularly when basic needs go unmet. The T.O.U.C.H. Closet Inc. recognizes these realities and responds by providing essential resources to children in need. Working in partnership with school counselors and social workers, and through a referral-only process, we prioritize students with the most urgent needs through the following services.
Something as simple as the right pair of shoes can make a big difference. Shoes that fit well help prevent discomfort and well-kept shoes can protect a child from embarrassment or bullying. When students have shoes that fit and match the season, they can show up to school feeling confident and ready to learn.
Children experiencing crisis often face uncertainty that makes it difficult to access even the most basic necessities. By providing new undergarments as a resource, The T.O.U.C.H. Closet helps ensure that children impacted by crisis or poverty have what they need to feel comfortable, cared for, and supported during challenging times.
Cold weather can be especially hard on children without proper outerwear. Warm, well-functioning coats make a meaningful difference in keeping students comfortable and ready for the day. We welcome donations of coats in excellent condition, in sizes ranging from youth to adult, to support children in our community.
In special circumstances, The T.O.U.C.H. Closet can connect children with a trusted network of licensed stylists and barbers who help with the care and maintenance of all hair types. Feeling good about their appearance can make a meaningful difference, helping children feel more comfortable, confident, and ready to take on their day.

My name is Mr. Tony, and I’m the Student Support Advocate at Hamilton. We are a title one school with most of our students living in not the best situations at home. This year we had three students that were homeless and living out of their car or a motel, three homes that caught on fire, and several student that their parents are barely keeping their head above water with bills and just could not afford coats and shoes for their kids. When I call to ask if they can use The T.O.U.C.H. Closets assistance I have had parents break down and cry over the fact that their kid will be receiving these items. I had at least four students that said “This is the first pair of brand new shoes I have ever had!” The smiles and joy I have seen when The T.O.U.C.H. Closet (Benita Chaplin) brings shoes, coats, and undergarments to my students has literally brought tears to my eyes. A big “THANK YOU” to The T.O.U.C.H. Closet from Hamilton Students and Staff.
